I first learned of Calypso Christmas when my grandparents came out to California for the holidays for the first time. They bought some of their holiday records, and I remember so well on Thanksgiving that Papa put this on the turntable at my parent’s house after dinner. Gramma, Papa, Mom, and Aunt Cam shared how they remember this record so well with the family. The 1956 recording was a holiday surprise present for the family in northern MN when it was so cold, and they were in a small house. They played this music with traditional trees and decorations, adding holiday spirits from the DePaul Chorus. When we listened to the record at home, Dad turned off the lights and the fireplace and we just listened to the music, preparing ourselves for Christmas. Either my Aunt or Uncle inherited the original record – I found this one on Discord as used. It is in good shape with occasional pops. Still memorable. The recording is available on CD from Amazon. My favorite songs are:
- Christmas in de Tropics
- De Virgin Mary had a Baby Boy
- Mary Had a Baby
- Mary’s Little Boy Cile
- Mary, Mary, Where is Your Baby
- Ring de Christmas Bells
The harmony and sound is magnificent.
